Sweet Lili is a three year old beauty. She currently lives in the Bethel foster home, a fantastic organization in China serving blind and visually impaired children! Lili is blind as a result of having both eyes removed due to retinoblastoma. She has been in remission for 18 months and has been thriving under the care of the Bethel staff.

Lili arrived into care with one eye already removed and a prosthetic eye. The staff at Bethel believe her family did everything they could for her, but it was too much or too expensive when they found out she had to have her other eye removed. As she was clearly so loved, she grieved when she arrived at Bethel. She had her second eye removal and new prosthetic eye in May 2013 and she has been cancer free since that operation. She has attached well to her caregivers at Bethel which will undoubtedly help her to attach and love her family. Lili is in Bethel’s Zhengzhou project. She lives in an apartment with 7 other children, and is in a room with 3 other girls. She has a bath every day and snacks along with meals. She goes to preschool every morning and afternoon.

Her hands are nimble and she can use one hand to grab the other. She normally grabs things and plays with toys on her own. She can do a few fine motor movements and she uses her fingers to grab onto and pick things up. Her left and right hands can pass things back and forth between them. She can grab onto cookies as well as fruit and eat them. She can walk on her own and she likes to jump and play in her crib. Lili can call out, “mama” and sometimes she will baby talk. She understands what the nannies say and she especially likes to play together with the nannies; and when they tease her, she will smile happily. The child remembers the sounds of people she’s acquainted with and when she hears someone she’s familiar with, she will want to be held. She rarely cries and when the child is crying her heart out, if you grab a toy and give it to her, grab something to give her to eat or hold her she will be ok.
