When she was abandoned, it was discovered that she had an eye that appeared smaller than the other. This has been diagnosed as congenital micropthalmia of the left eye. Additionally, a cataract was subsequently discovered. She likely has low to no vision in that eye. She does not respond to sounds, and when her hearing was tested, she was categorized as being profoundly deaf. She has also been diagnosed with CHD. She had her first stage of open heart surgery, but when her file was reviewed with Little Heart Medicals, it was made clear that she will need further intervention, and soon. She has also has delays and has no means of communication.

Rubella syndrome should be a strong contender if families are investigating why a child is born with a combination of hearing loss, vision loss and heart problems. Efforts must be made to utilize her vision to get her access to (probably signed) language as soon as possible. Rubella syndrome results from the mother having German measles (Rubella) during pregnancy. Some children are born only deaf, some deaf with serious visual impairments, and some deaf and blind and with heart problems. Rubella syndrome is not genetic.
