Waiting To Be Chosen: Topher

October 20, 2018 Children Who Wait 0 Comments

Topher is an incredibly cute little boy, born in September of 2016 and diagnosed with HIE and backflow of PV.

Topher likes baths and will dance for joy when he is put into the bathtub. When he is sleeping, he likes to suck a soother or his own hand. He would often fall asleep in his stroller and then be put into his crib once sleeping soundly.

Topher has a ready smile. As of his last update (see below), he was exhibiting development delays. He could turn over, raise his head, and stand with support. Topher has had some feeding issues and was using a feeding tube for a short period of time, but no longer is using that. He has some weakness in his left hand, but his caregivers are seeing some improvement there, too!

The sooner Topher gets home and into a loving family with access to the resources he will need to continue progressing, the better!

Update from January 2018:

“A shunt was placed. Sometimes there were time periods when he wouldn’t eat, so they gave him a feeding tube. Currently he already has stopped using the feeding tube. His hand is better than it was before. Currently, he can raise his hand and grab things.”

Update from December 2017:

Height: 72.5 cm
Weight: 9.24 kg
Head circumference: 46.5 cm
Chest circumference: 46 cm
Foot length: 11 cm
Teeth: 3

“He has not been sick. Every day the nannies give him a left hand massage. His muscle tension is basically normal. His body has strength. There is not a history of seizures. He doesn’t have any breathing problems. His heart condition is relatively normal. Because of his ventricle-peritoneal shunt, he can’t stand independently. He can only stand with support and his left hand movements aren’t flexible. If you feed him too much, he will immediately vomit.Don’t feed him too much; only feed him in fixed amounts.

He can turn over on his left and right, raise his head, and stand with support, but does not lift his feet to take steps. Compared to other children the same age, he is a little slower in development. His left hand’s movements aren’t flexible. He can subconsciously say “ba ba, ma ma” and can imitate crawling movements, but still can’t crawl. Occasionally he will make “a” sounds. He gets along with the other children.”

There is a $500 agency grant for Topher’s adoption with Madison Adoption Associates. Other grants may be available based on the adoptive family’s circumstances. Agency grants are awarded as agency fee reductions. MAA also partners with the Brittany’s Hope Foundation for matching grants, which are given out twice a year January and July) and to families that are officially matched with a child.

Topher needs a family with an approved home study to be able to move forward with adopting him. If you have an approved home study or a home study in process and are interested in adopting Topher, please fill out a free PAP Waiting Child Review Form, which can be found here.
