Advocating for Children With HIV

August 18, 2017 Children Who Wait 0 Comments

The Lily Project became an HIV advocacy and education blog in October 2015, after its admin visited a group home for kids with HIV in China. She met several children who were waiting to be adopted, and several more who did not have files yet prepared for adoption. In China, as well as in America, there is heavy stigma regarding HIV. For a long time, Chinese orphanages have deemed kids with HIV to be “unadoptable.” But that is simply not the case. HIV is a very manageable special need and the disease not something to fear.

The Lily Project strives to keep an updated list of children with HIV in China who are waiting to be adopted and need additional advocacy. Each child currently waiting on this list lives in a group home for kids with HIV. There are several group homes for children with HIV throughout China. The kids all attend school, take medication for their HIV, and the staff in the group homes take good care of them. Their photos are blurred for their protection as well as their group homes’ protection, but the agencies have pictures to share with interested families.
