Waiting to be Chosen: Sofia

September 14, 2018 Children Who Wait 0 Comments

Sofia is an absolutely beautiful little girl, born in February of 2013 with Down syndrome and congenital heart disease – ASD, VSD, and PDA. One month after surgery to repair Sofia’s heart, it was discovered that her trachea had been injured while she was intubated during surgery. At that time, she underwent a tracheotomy and had a trach in place for three years, which was recently removed.

But the unfortunate complication that occurred during Sophia’s heart surgery resulted in a rather fortunate situation. Because of her trach, her orphanage life has been lived in the orphanage hospital with a wonderful nanny who has raised her like a daughter.

Sofia is a smiley, outgoing, and confident child. She can dress herself, brush her teeth, and she is potty trained. She says simple words like mama, baba, ayi and jiejie. Sofia imitates others and copies hand movements, as you can see in her video when she is outside with the social worker.

Sofia likes to play with others, listen to music, and play with all kinds of toys, but especially those that play music. She is interested in new things and playing games. She likes watching singing and dancing programs and she will shake her body with the music. She has a strong desire to perform.

Sofia is closely attached to her caretaker and she enjoys cuddling and kissing her. She is helpful and kind to everyone, including visitors who she will move chairs for, say bye bye to, and blow kisses at.

Sofia is just waiting for her turn to be part of a forever family and we are hoping that day will come soon!
